What is fatty liver?

Fatty liver disease, or steatosis, is a condition in which fat in the liver builds up due to malfunctioning of nutrients, sugar, fat and proteins processing in the liver cell.

Some basics...

Fatty Liver

Metabolic dysfunctions associated with Steatotic (fatty) liver disease

Alcohol related fatty liver disease (ALD)

Fatty liver is not a single disease rather it is group of diseases that present as fatty liver.  Multiple insults can lead to fatty changes in the liver.

Alcohol related fatty liver disease (ALD)

Alcohol is the most widely known cause of fatty liver but the incidence of fatty liver in absence of alcohol misuse is increasing

Risk factors include: insulin resistance/type II diabetes, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, obesity, protein calorie malnutrition

Monogenic liver diseases

Monogenic liver diseases

Metabolic dysfunctions associated with Steatotic (fatty) liver disease

Genetic diseases including hereditary hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease in which the body becomes overloaded in iron or copper, respectively, which can cause multiple problems, including liver tissue damage.

Fatty liver disease is a treatable condition and treatment may result in a healing of liver tissue with appropriately structured care.  If untreated, fatty liver may progress to an end-stage process such as cirrhosis and subsequent complication of liver failure, liver cancer and finally death.

What can happen and what can be done?

Prognosis & Treatment

If someone has fatty liver and does not receive treatment, the excess fat in their liver can lead to inflammation, scarring (fibrosis), and eventually progress to a serious condition called cirrhosis, in which the liver can no longer fulfill its essential duties. Liver failure then ensues. Cirrhosis also greatly increases the risk for developing liver cancer. This is all the more concerning as fatty liver often has no symptoms in its early stages, making early detection crucial.  Fatty liver disease is a treatable condition and treatment may result in a healing of liver tissue with appropriately structured care.  We can help!
